Dan Exner and I just wrapped up my highly contentious, and very unusual divorce. I cannot express how grateful I am to have had Dan on my side during this extremely stressful and confusing time in my life. My first piece of advice to you: you want Dan on your side, especially as a divorcing father. My second piece of advice to you: take his advice very, very seriously, even if you are getting frustrated with the legal system and the bias it has against fathers. Dan is an expert at this uphill battle, but you need to expect an uphill battle as a father. Last year, I called Dan and the advice he gave during the consultation shaped our entire case for the better. He helped me to protect my children and myself, saying he hopes I don't need him, and expressing hope that my ex and I are able to save the marriage. As soon as I suspected there was no saving the marriage, I hired him. During this first meeting, Dan listened to my concerns and gave me direct answers in as compassionate a way as possible. What I appreciated the most was that Dan never tried to spare my feelings at the expense of the truth or his professional opinion. Thats not to say he was harsh or indifferent to my feelings, but he told me the hard truths when I needed them. I followed Dans advice meticulously (though often reluctantly), and doing so greatly increased my bargaining position. While still trying to save my marriage, his advice helped me to continue making legally safe choices while not sabotaging my chances at a peaceful resolution. It was only weeks later that I called him and asked him to file my divorce. He convinced me to have her served in the least confrontational manner, for which I am grateful. Following his advice, I committed to staying in the house and she moved out. For that first couple months, I needed to call Dan multiple times in a week. He responded quickly, giving me actionable advice or handling the legal action himself, and reassuring me that I wasn't crazy for being upset at the latest incident with my ex and the kids. Our divorce remained extremely contentious for a year and a half. At every step, Dan would ask me my priorities, then give me the advice that would best get me to the outcome I desired. He listened to me, yet still would tell me if he believed that my plans would lead me away from the outcomes I had prioritized. This became increasingly frustrating over the very long time that my divorce was going on, but eventually, everything Dan predicted came true and I am glad I followed his advice. It just took all the way until our third (yes third) final pre-trial with a guardian ad litem and a social worker involved before the severity of my ex's behavior became undeniable to the court, and some real consequences arose. After that, we were able to come to an agreement with my ex over placement issues with our children, and Dan was incredible with the work he did on our contract. If I raised a contract concern, he found an elegant way to address it. When we went to mediation, Dan argued harder in my favor than I would have argued for myself. I didn't get everything I wanted (no one ever does), but what I got was very close. After mediation, Dan put in extra work to ensure that our final hearing was moved up by almost three months so we could finalize this and I could put this horror behind me. Dan is an expert. He is compassionate, but direct and thorough. He advocates fiercely for his clients, not just the outcome he personally thinks would be best. There were times I told him "I want you to do this." He would fight hard, even when he expressed his skepticism on it's chances for success to me. Dan made the whole process less confusing, less terrifying, and in the end got me a very satisfying outcome.
