Dr. Lyons has been fantastic to work with. She is responsive, thorough and patient. She helped identify psoriasis on my hands and prescribed the right treatment for this.

My mom was a patient here today and what started out as a pleasant experience, turned sour over the course of eight hours. My mom has Basal Cell Carcinoma and scheduled an 8am appointment with Dr. Camile Hexsel for a MOHS procedure. I met my mom at the office to provide support and reassurance. We checked in with the lovely Linda and then the nurse, Rachel, took us back to a room where she prepped my mom physically and with information about the procedure. She was kind and very personable, offering blankets and snacks, but did forewarn us that they were short staffed today. After the area was numbed, Dr. Hexsel proceeded with the MOHS and was kind enough to allow me to remain in the room and observe the procedure. The area was bandaged and we were instructed to wait to ensure the margins were cleared, which was about an hour. My mom had a 2nd area that Dr. Hexsel was kind enough to assess and offered to treat with a MOHS (after confirming it was also Basal Cell Carcinoma) during this visit as well, which my mom agreed to. We went back in the reception area, patiently waiting for Dr. Hexsel to become available to stitch the 2 areas she treated, as they were rather large open wounds now (temporarily covered with a dressing). I left briefly to get my mom some lunch around 12pm and unfortunately had to leave entirely at 1pm as I had prior commitments. I kept in touch with my mom via text messaging and as several other patients came and went, she was finally called back at 2:10pm. After another hour of waiting, one area was sutured at 3:30pm. Meanwhile, the second area was causing moderate discomfort. At 4pm, she received additional numbing to the area; however, not a word was spoken to her after the numbing was administered and she was left alone in the room again, confused about the plan of care. At 4:30pm (8.5 hours after arrival time), my mom was growing impatient with the lack of direction and unknown and wanted to know what was going on. Dr. Hexsel becomes short with her and said, I have other patients who still have cancer, which made my mom feel horrible. Not to mention - she also has cancer! Perhaps it is not as bad as other patients, but she is still a patient with a scary diagnosis. Dr. Hexsel continued arguing with my mom, even having the nerve to say that she had also been there eight hours and raising her voice enough for others in the office to hear, even as my mom asked, youre really going to keep arguing with me? Dr. Hexsel then asked my mom if she wanted to just leave the second wound open instead of it being sutured. If that was best practice, I think she would have done that already. So to even offer it as an option, especially after yelling at my mom, was out of line. Dr. Hexsel sutured the area and swiftly exited the room leaving nurse Rachel to review the discharge summary. My mom promptly called me from her car, sobbing due to this awful interaction and treatment from Dr. Hexsel. To add insult to injury, the prescription for pain medication was written incorrectly and my mom was unable to get the medication filled until 7pm, after the pharmacist worked diligently to contact Dr. Hexsel so she could correct her errors. Linda and Rachel - Thank you for your kindness, patience, and compassion. Dr. Hexsel - Shame on you! As a physician, you are in a position of power over vulnerable populations. You may have 20 years of experience in this field, but my mom does not have 20 years of experience being a cancer patient. This is a new diagnosis and a scary reality she now has to face as she ages. Healthcare is stressful, especially when short staffed, but you took an oath to practice with dignity and you certainly did not uphold that today. I am disappointed and honestly, furious. How dare you make a patient cry. You should feel ashamed. A patient who waited with composure for over EIGHT hours, was hungry, tired, in pain, and scared. Where is your compassion? How dare you.
