Working with Debra Quadt of Redfin, Tucson, over the past several months had been a pleasant experience, which is why my wife and I decided to work with them to get our Tucson home sold. They hosted an open house at our home last Sunday, May 5, 2019 – during which several thousands dollars worth of personal items (including very large visible items such as a men’s leather briefcase and DSLR camera in it’s bag!) were stolen. None of the stolen items were out in the open/in plain view (as they shouldn’t be) and were in our chest of drawers covered under several layers of fabric and clothing and/or tucked behind travel luggage in our master bedroom closet. So not only was there gross negligence from Redfin, who apparently had two of their agents present at our premises during the three-hour long open house on May 5, 2019 (with zero potential buyers officially signing in to view our property), but the way my wife and I were treated by Redfin subsequently was even more shocking. Three main points to note: 1. Our Redfin agent, Debra Quadt, chose not speak with us via phone or meet with us in person, following what happened during the open house on May 5, 2019, despite us asking her multiple times to do so. Ms. Quadt only communicated (with several hours of delay) to any emails we sent asking for answers, guidance on next steps etc., which added to our stress, trauma and disappointment resulting from the theft. The first action Ms. Quadt took two days following the open house, after we reported the incident to the police and to her, was to take our listing off the market – without our permission. 2. Three days after the theft, I wrote the following to Ms Quadt: “…please put the house back on the market. Moving forward I would like to be present for every showing, and I don’t want to entertain buyers without agents from well established brokerage companies.” The response we received from Ms. Quadt was the following: "…We believe we would be unable to successfully sell your home with the restrictions on how and who may be allowed into your home for a showing. For this reason, we want to assure you that you are free to seek the assistance of another broker." We were shocked to read that Redfin decided to void our contract after the theft - based on no fault of our own - additionally suggesting that Redfin didn't feel it was reasonable for us, as sellers, to request that we be present at our own home for any future showings and for Redfin to verify potential qualified buyers coming into our home. This seems really unfair and discriminatory. 3. Given that all of the items stolen were during the open house hosted by Redfin at our property last Sunday, we expected Redfin’s liability insurance to compensate us for the items stolen and all other related expenses incurred subsequently as a result of the theft such as installing a security alarm system at home, using several thousand airline miles to purchase a last minute ticket for my wife, who resides in Boston, to fly to Tucson this weekend to assist me with this investigation and so on.) However, Redfin did not even offer to cover any of these open house theft-related expenses under their own liability insurance or otherwise, and instead pulled out of our contract. It is unfortunate that Redfin does not have a mechanism for clients like us to post a review on their website unless they close a sale or purchase.
