    As a recently retired couple, we wanted to explore the Palm Springs area and so we decided to do a short term rental with Preferred Rental Properties for 6 weeks.  A few days before we arrived, the property manager let us know that the air conditioner had broke. The day we arrived a brand new a/c was put in by the owner. Great, because it was 120 degrees outside by the time the a/c company left at 7:30 pm that night.We subsequently found out that the internet was not working and notified the property manager. She gave us a contact to call which we did on two separate occasions in order to get the Wi-Fi to work properly.After a few days, we noticed the dishwasher wasn't getting anything clean. Again we notified the property manager. At this point she went silent and never responded to the dishwasher problem. So for the rest of our stay we hand to wash our dishes; let the a/c guys in to further fix and inspect the new a/c while continuing to deal with Wi-Fi issues.Overall the place was lovely but dated. The unit was sufficiently clean when we arrived although the property manager stated no one had rented for months which we could tell.We made arrangements with the property manager to leave two weeks early for personal reasons and signed an addendum to this effect. This worked well because the property manager wanted to use the unit for her visiting family during our cancelled period. We promptly received a refund for paid rent and went on our way.Shortly after we left we began to wonder about when our security would be returned. Approx., 3 weeks later we were told we could come by the office and pick up the security refund check. To our amazement Preferred Rental Properties charged us $200 for a cleaning fee, plus another $275 for a carpet cleaning, plus another $65 for talking to Wi-Fi contact, and the overage for the electric bill. We ended up with barely a third of our deposit being refunded with no explanation why.So we went back and looked at our lease. It stated security deposit, $1,000 and under cleaning fee it was left blank. No issue was written about special COVID-19 circumstances or any other fees. We told the property manager we would clean a day before we left and she told us it wasn't necessary but we did it anyway knowing it the right thing to do. We were never told about a cleaning fee or a carpet cleaning fee, the amounts etc., and we certainly were not advised at the time we signed the addendum that we would be charged any additional fees - and we took it upon ourselves to leave the place clean!  No explanation/statement about undue wear and tear were included with the bill or of any stains/shedding from our older non-shed hypoallergenic bichon.My husband went back to the Preferred Rental Properties office to speak to the property manage directly. She stated that she would talk to the owner of the business and let us know. We never heard from either the property manager or the business owner after several attempts.A very stressful and disappointing experience for a senior couple during the pandemic.
