The artwork here mostly consists of drawings on some flimsy-looking paper, 3D cardboard or wooden pieces, some knitted items, and some thin metal-looking items such as clocks. The artwork isn't THAT impressive (think high school art students), but considering the limited materials that inmates have access to, it's not bad and definitely makes for a strange and somewhat unique item to own if you decide to purchase. Most items are $20 and above, but there are some cheaper items around $5-10 such as postcards or wooden mugs. There are some best-seller items here, but I won't tell which ones ;)

When I visited San Quentin Beach I found out about the prison's gift shop, but it was a Saturday so the shop was closed. I was intrigued, so I made a point to go back on a weekday during business hours. The shop is small, but lined with work from the inmate artist in various mediums and styles. I spent a few minutes chatting with Andre, the gentleman who runs the shop and the art program at the prison. He displays new art weekly, has friendly smile and was willing to answer my questions.I will most definitely revisit again when I'm in the area on a weekday afternoon.

This was supposed to be one of the highlights of our weekend in the Bay Area. The posted time says the shop opens at 12:30. We arrived at 12:15 and waited around until 1. Nothing. The guard at the gate had no info and he tried calling a number but no one picked up. I saw a bunch of stuff through the window that I wanted to buy too. Waste of time and a bridge toll.

Stopped here a few years ago, and visited both the gift shop and museum. I bought a cup that said "Made in San Quentin" and it had stripes on it. It's a bit unnerving going in there. You walk through a very tall gate which has a strongly-worded sign that they will NOT get you out if a prison riot occurs when you are visiting. Also, the prisoners on good behavior congregate close by the museum and gift shop. (They were watched by one armed guard.) If you are female, as I am, it was a bit awkward walking past them. I just "sucked it up" and walked in anyway. Once we got into the gift shop and museum, to us, it was worth the temporary discomfort. The museum has the total history of San Quentin, and how the prison was started, up to the present day.

To me, a gift shop sounds inappropriate. Think...hobby shop. The hoyrs cam be a bit off. I'd call ahead to confirm. I tginknthey said, all artwork is done by inmates on death row or people who are in for people in for life.
