Rich is an amazing teacher! I've been learning from him for over 3 years now. He is extremely patient and is able to point out ways to improve in a number of ways. The classes are reasonably priced as well.

I've been taking group Ukulele lessons from Richard Hawthorne for about 2 years, initially in a beginner class and now through a series of continuation classes (currently all online due to the Covid-19 pandemic). Rich impresses me with his ability to convey musical concepts and techniques to students having a wide range of music backgrounds, from the deep to the very shallow. Rich also exudes warmness and positivity. I can honestly say I learn at least one useful thing I apply to my practice each and every class.

I've been taking guitar classes from Rich at The Guitarist for years because I get great instruction in how to play, how to practice, and music theory. His passion for playing and teaching guitar is always evident, and he has a knack for explaining and demonstrating technique clearly. Sometimes I am amazed at his patience! The classes are fun and we get a variety of experience with finger-picking, chords, and styles of music - plus he takes requests so sometimes we play a piece that I picked. We play music from Green Day, the Beatles, Tom Petty, Lord Huron, REM, Mumford & Sons, Weezer, Foo Fighters, Rolling Stones, even a Celtic jig, and many more. You start from where you are - you can be a total beginner - and he will put you in a session that's right for you, and then you will gradually advance at your own pace. If you have a guitar you can use that, and if you don't have one yet, don't go out and buy one -- ask Rich to help you select one so you get a good quality instrument and don't get ripped off. He has a variety in stock at different price ranges.
