I highly reccomend these guys. They're a local family owned business that did an amazing job for us. They answered any and all questions I had, came out completed the seeding and went over everything with us for future lawn care. Grass came up quick, thick, and lush. Highly recommend!

Great service! Answers calls and returns voicemails quickly. Can get a quote over the phone. Accommodated my weird schedule. On time for appointment. Gave precise instructions on how to prep dirt and how to water after hydroseeding.
Hydroseeding is a cost effective alternative to laying sod BUT you HAVE TO WATER AND STAY OFF the seeded ground, and it takes longer than sod to root in because with sod you're paying for grass that someone has already started growing. And any seeding should really be done in the fall or the spring. Unfortunately I planned poorly and seeded in the middle of June!
TL:DR
I got a quote over the phone! Then I got my dirt ready for seeding (which is the same as getting it ready for sod): rototill, topsoil, rototill, level, loose, dry, and lightly raked. You can cut that prep down to only: level, loose, dry, and lightly raked. But I went all out with topsoil and heavy rototilling.
I scheduled a Sunday morning application. Then my schedule changed so I called on Thursday at 7PM and got my application moved to the next morning at 8AM! And they were on time!
I did do all the dirt prep work myself: rototilled the clay soil, added topsoil, rototilled it together a little, and levelled it. Then lightly raked it the night before hydroseeding
So I had 900 sq. ft. of yard I needed grass in and I did ask the prep work myself.
Hydroseed application cost $200 and I DID NO LABOR. I just reprogrammed the sprinkler system. It took them seriously 20-30 minutes to setup, apply, and clean up. I just have to stay off the grass while it grows.
The sod quote was $555 to have sod DELIVERED and then I would have to install it, that's a TON OF LABOR. I bet having it installed professionally would be another $500-1000. (FYI, lots of contractor's estimates are just cost of materials X 2 or 3=estimate. So $555 X 2 or 3=$1110-1665 estimate)
The grass is coming in nicely! My big dogs are playful and rough on grass so I'm waiting longer than usual before letting them on it.
