Peaks Island is the biggest and one of the best islands on Casco Bay in Portland, Maine. In the summer time it's beautiful and have amazing views of Portland. The whole island is fun to ride a bike or run around.

Don't waste your time or money! Based on the reviews we took the 2:15 p.m. ferry to Peaks Island with the idea of returning to Portland in a few hours. We got off the ferry and proceeded to explore and there was nothing to see - nothing to do -- the few shops and restaurants were all closed and even their "famous" umbrella cover museum which looks like a small run down building was "closed for the season! Most of the people who came over on the ferry with us were also disappointed and we were all glad to get on the very next ferry back. A couple had promised their kids ice cream when they got there but the ice cream shop was also closed. They tried to buy sodas from a vending machine near the ferry and that didn't even go right. They pushed for Diet Coke and got a Coke -- they pushed for grape and got a Diet Coke -- the kids pushed for orange but that didn't even work. All in all, the waste of a few hours of our life! Maybe if you want go kayaking it might be worth it, but the views from Peaks Island didn't seem much different than from the ferry or anywhere else. You can also rent golf carts or bicycles to ride around ( if they are open) but I question why you would want to do that!

Trip to the Peaks Island via $7 round trip ferry is great. However, besides the cheap ferry ride there is nothing else to do on the island. All the touristy shops are 2 mins walk from the ferry port. You could rent golf carts ($40 per hr, min 2 hrs required), but eh...
