Update (5/29/2018): Monthly fee has risen from $120 to $130. Chelmsford Location is at $105. Attention and motivation to students are clearly visible whereas this Westford location is close to non-existence.
I would give 0 star if I could. Kumon is great after school program but just not at this location.
Kumon reading is very helpful.
Kumon Math is little dry and very repetitive. I would recommend Russian Math instead. Kumon reinforces the repetitive technical skills. Russian Math is about problem solving and makes you think.
Now, here are the reasons I would not recommend this location. There are other Kumon locations not far from this one.
1) Stingy! We've been to Kumon in Minnesota and in Brookline MA, and we are accustomed to getting a new color bag when you reach a certain level. This is to get kids excited, motivated and frankly it's just bad to use the same homework bag from day one for your entire Kumon years. This place certainly does not care about it.
2) Strict start times. We "sgined up" to start at 10AM on Saturday and today we were 30 minutes late due to an earlier soccer game. Joanne, the owner says, "She'll do corrections today and not the new homework as she only has 30 minutes. The very confused me asked whether we had to leave in 30 minutes. Her response: "I've already let you enjoy special treatment because she has soccer/basketball games"
3) Questionable teaching methods. Teacher tells a parent in front of the kid: "Let me tell you the good and the bad. The bad first, his handwriting is really bad and he forgot to fill out his record book." How about swap the word "bad" with "needs improvement"? Maybe I'm being picky, but this is not how I talk to my kids.
4) Shady. This place is about saving their money by not giving out new bags when kids work hard and archive their new levels and by forcing the kids to fill out record book instead of themselves,. Making money by replacing new homework with old homework that needs corrections so your kids will be stuck with them longer. Would you not give your kids new homework just because they have to correct previous homework? No school that I know of does this.
Westford Kumon, your special treatment is too much for us to handle. We are moving on.
Update: Please do yourself a favor and checkout other locations. Its night and day difference compare to Chelmsford location. This place is expensive and definitely not kids focused. You can't run a business without passion, beliefs and ethics.
