image Nebraska City Applejack Festival Parade is a great, old-time parade right down the real, American, small town main street. You can sit on the sunny side of the street or over in the shade. Every type of fire, police, and rescue unit you can imagine from towns all over Nebraska and Iowa participate, which the children love. I've never seen so many types of Tangier vehicles in my life. I missed a few of them in the photos so you'll have to go and see for yourself. Marching bands proudly playing. Kids throwing and collecting candy. The American flag proudly being carried in every shape and form and so many people watching with pride and their hands over their hearts just as natural as it should be. No politics to ruin it even though some politicians walk or ride through the polite crowd. A bit of Americana in real life. It feels like Mayberry. Explore the stores. Go visit the Civil War Museum. Visit the huge house that's now a bank. See the multiple craft and quilting shows. Get a solid home-made lunch for a pittance. Visit the book sale. Go the activities. Cotton candy, kettle corn, and shaved ice. Drive a little out of town and see the local attractions and the major craft show. There's enough to keep you busy for a whole day and even a second one, if you like.

image I loved Nebraska City, but it is harder and harder to want to spend an entire day there anymore due to the lack of decent places to dine and shop like just a few years ago. Many stores have odd hours, making it hard to figure out when/if they are open, and local diner favorites Johnny's Corner Caf and Mary's Caf, close up very early, no dinner hours at all, even on tourist weekends, the time they could make the most money by being open. Yes, there are fast food chains and other mediocre places on the south end of town, but if I want that, I can get that without the long drive. I hope someday this town will thrive again, but right now it seems to be giving up and I visit far less often. I hope there is a plan of action to revive Nebraska City soon, it is sad to drive through and see all the empty storefronts and restaurants that can't afford to stay open long enough to make money.
