If I could leave 0 stars, I would. I retained Amrita years ago for a pretty simply divorce. We had no property to divide and child support was already addressed through NC Child Support. What we needed addressed was custody and visitation. Reading my divorce decree and the emails between her and I, you'd think she was representing both my ex and I. My ex had retained his own attorney and was the money maker so I do not understand why she felt the need to 'represent' both sides but she definitely did not do me any favors, which many attorneys have told me over the years. I do have custody, which was a battle with Amrita to have written into our agreement, even though my ex completely agreed that I should and that our son would reside with me and he would have visitation. That agreement had been made upon our separation and was how we had been living out our separation for quite some time. I just needed Amrita to put it in legal jargon to make it official. It took countless emails and conversations to get that part written correctly, which obviously drove up my costs. What Amrita did manage to do; however, was make our visitation schedule vague and ambiguous, making it impossible to enforce any kind of consistency for our son should any issues arise, and issues definitely did arise for a number of years. I have taken my divorce paperwork to multiple attorneys over the years and they have all said it is poorly constructed, very ambiguous, and not even enforceable. This has lead to so many extra years of frustration and confusion between my ex and I. Had we had a solid divorce decree, which clearly outlined what needed to be done, we could have saved ourselves years of frustrating conflict and disagreement. Thankfully, he is finally much more reasonable to deal with now and we don't have to rely on our divorce decree to determine who is supposed to do what very much anymore. Every time I really needed to be able to rely on our decree to enforce an issue and could not, I was left with frustration and disappointment. I did not want my review to be full of that frustration and disappointment so I waited years to write this. All of that being said, should my ex and I ever need to rely on our divorce decree to navigate a difficult or confusing decision, it would need to be rewritten by a competent attorney. I know some of this is also my fault because I finally just agreed to the divorce agreement the way that it was. Of course, my attorney, Amrita, was advising me that the agreement read a certain way and I trusted that she was right. She; however, knew, or should have known, that it was ambiguous and that it lacked structure and detail and would lead to an unenforceable mess for me. It took more than a handful of emails just to get her to write one paragraph correctly and I eventually, being a single mom of 3, just ran out of money and couldn't afford to keep going back and forth with her anymore. The divorce needed to be finalized and I was just going to have to deal with the consequences of poor and unfavorable representation, which I did. I would advise you to avoid doing the same.
