I am editing this a few years later. This is now, in my opinion, one of the prime options for Independant Living in Abilene. In fact, I now live here myself. The bumps in the road that I originally cited were all part of the transition of owners. The current owner is great, the staff are great and the residents really do have that feel of family. While they are good at what they do they are expensive. Less so than other places but still cost an arm and a leg to live there. Their new owners were not going to raise rates then turned around and did just that. You must pay the premium for meals even if you would rather prepare your own. Meals tend to be o.k. but high sodium canned veggies and lots of starches.

Years ago, when my mother lived here and they had just undergone a ownership change, raised the rent, etc. I posted (someplace I don't remember where) a not so glowing review. Times have changed and my mother is long gone and now I find myself moving in to University Place in Abilene, TX. Let me tell you that the entire experience of shrinking my lifestyle and living in an Independant Living environment was made much easier my their staff. By the time I left and now prepare for my move I had met several of the residents that will most likely become friends as time goes by. AND I am looking forward to my time there and my new home and family. Yes, family, because that is how I felt while I was there.

My mother recently moved out of her apartment after 7 years. Before she left, bed bugs were brought into the facility. My mother had not traveled anywhere, had not spent the night out and did not bring them in. There were also bed bugs in 5 other apartments. The managers told my brother that they would treat the apartment, and she would not have to pay. They ended up having to heat treat the apartment. Low and behold, she was charged on her next bill for all the treatments, the heat treatment was over $1000. in total she paid $2000 for bedbugs that she did not bring in to UP, when we were told by the manager we would only have to pay to have her clothes cleaned. Then when she moved out after keeping her apartment very clean, she was charged another $1190 in cleaning fees for normal wear for a one bedroom apartment. I would have given 0 stars, but she did enjoy living there and most of the trouble was recent.

My mother actually lived at University Place about five years ago before she passed away. So it was logical for me at this point in my life looking for a place to live that I would look look there. I cannot tell you how welcome I was made to feel how friendly not only the staff, but the other residence were. I am one week away from actually moving in and I cannot wait. If you were in the Abilene area and need an independent living home with friendly people, you really need to give University Place a look.
