I would like the Chamber of Commerce to know what we experienced. On May 13th, my husband and I went to the Calico Cupboard Bakery and Cafe. We had a very bad experience with the two young servers. It was my husband's birthday and he had taken the day off. We have always loved LaConner and have souvenirs around the house that remind us of the good time we have had there. We had a lovely lunch at Pier 7 and loved our walk on the new boardwalk (at least it was our first time seeing it). So this is what happened at the Calico Cupboard Bakery and Cafe: A couple had just left the cafe after looking at the outrageous prices. I asked if there was seating outside. The server replied *yes* and that she would seat us. Given it was my husband’s birthday and our 22nd anniversary that brought us to La Conner, he splurged and ordered a piece of pie and coffee. At those prices $7.99 for a piece of pie and still full from lunch at Pier 7, I decided with our budget we would just get one piece. I asked how to get outside, when a second server walked in and said she would seat us. Then she turned around and said there was only one dirty table and that it was RESERVED for customers eating in house. I said, we are eating here. After all, my husband’s pie was served on a non disposal plate. I guess ordering just one piece of pie didn’t make us eligible for outdoor seating. We did not mind waiting for the dirty table to be cleaned. It was around 2pm and not likely, other customers would be coming in for lunch. When the first server led us to another part of the bakery with indoor seating, I was disturbed and truly baffled. I thought let’s get the pie to go and go sit outside somewhere else. But, I decided we did not want to support a business that would not allow us to sit outside on a beautiful day. Who would choose to sit indoors on a beautiful day!!!!???? I asked for our money back and asked for documentation that the charge was reversed. The server said the charge was reversed but refused to give us documentation. We walked out. The server then said in an insincere voice: “Have a nice day”. My response: I was until I went into this cafe. A young man lurking around the corner came out as we were leaving. He said to the servers: “sorry you had to deal with that”. I love LaConner. We have many fond memories of LaConner. When the kids were young we would stop for meals or get something from this cafe on our way back from Orcas Island. On the way to the car, I purchased a small souvenir from the Friends and Feather shop to mark my anniversary visit to LaConner. The cashier was friendly, kind and didn't mind that I just purchase something small... the same price we paid at the cafe.
