Old school hardware shop - staffed by youngsters. With the loss of Stoneway Hardware on Stone Way we need this place to stay in business!

Wonderful mom and pop shop that has anything you could need/want (from a hardware store). Staff is extremely friendly. Very creative with fitting their broad selection in such a small space.

1-Star experience due to the worst treatment I have ever received from a store clerk. -- I stopped into Tweedy and Popp about 10 minutes before closing on 2/1/2022 (arriving at the same time as another customer) to pick up some chain, lag eye bolts, and S hooks to hang a fixture from the ceiling. Conscious of the time I opted to speed the process and inquired where to find the chain (and was told where it was located). The one I selected happened to be the only one without a price listed and I went to inquire, but another customer was being helped. To keep things moving, I diverted and went in search of the lag bolts/hooks. Just as I was grabbing those, the store clerk appeared in the isle and irritatedly stated "We're Closed!" There had been no previous announcement of closing, but he acted as if this was obvious and I had ignored the fact. I indicated I had found the items and then noted I still needed the chain I had inquired about, but wanted to know the price. He frustratedly asked how much I needed, I said "6 ft.", and he grabbed cutters. I indicated the one I wanted and he pulled out an ~6 ft length without telling me the price, which I decided to let slide given the circumstances. I noted I needed 4 cuts (1.5' lengths) and he irritatedly barked "you'll have to come back tomorrow!" We were standing right there and he had cutters in his hand - it would take 60 seconds tops (likley less), so I asked "can't you just cut it?" He agreed, but then proceeded to very angrily lecture about not coming in at closing time. Once he got the right tool, cutting it took all of a few seconds, but he left it in a 6 ft length (so I'm going to have to use a hack saw to make the shorter lengths since I don't have a cutting tool). He announced to another store clerk who appeared at the register that it was 6 ft and only then indicated the price (side note: the other clerk was cordial). The whole ordeal was over and I was back in my vehicle at 6:04 PM. I respect that stores close and that employees have lives and other responsibilities, but that doesn't excuse this treatment. The door was not locked when I arrived. Other customers were still coming in. There was no announcement that the store was closing prior to the whole episode and there was no offer of "we're closing, can I help you quickly find something?" Instead, I left feeling attacked and upset by the interaction - and shocked that a customer would be treated this way.

Wallingford has much charm and with a neighborhood familiarity that offers a rich dining and shopping experience. It reminds me of neighborhoods that once were why we came to Seattle in the first place. Heroes can be found here in Wallingford like the handsome, young man who helped me find the "most affordable" solution to my DIY crisis. I had Lowes (the big box bungle of a store) cut a closet rod far too long and in haste, so it was splintered on one end. But the darn thing cost $40 (for a wooden closet rod!), so I had to make it work. The cashier/hardware expert at Tweedy and Pop, a name so full of charm it's reason enough to patronize the place, sold me a small hacksaw and told me how to use it. Don't laugh, I wasn't sure and he explained cheerfully and without guile or judgment. It cost under $5 and I looked around for something else to buy. When I returned home to my task it worked perfectly slicing off Ham-thick slices of the closet rod until it fit perfectly. I felt accomplished at a task I was frankly worried I would bungle, but, alas, I did not and in no small part to a caring person who helped me solve my problem without making his first concern generating the most income for his employer. Oh, I shall be back and I encourage you to stay away from Big Boxes and support locally-owned vestiges of hardware and nails in an old school resurrected for our benefit. Beware inside are caring people in an uncaring world who deserve your patronage. I do not know the worker's name, but am sure should he won't remember me either. This was not an unusual act of kindness on his part. . .he has done this kind of thing before. While I wish I could thank him in person. I suppose thanking him at all would be unnecessary altogether which is why the entire incident was so magical. Thank you, Tweedy and Pop. I shall be back soon.
