Tractor Supply is a retail farm store specializing in home improvement, tools, and hardware for building or repairing vehicles and lawnmowers, boats, and marine equipment. J. W. Knapp established a tractor Supply Company in 1942 with a single 10 x 20-foot building in Lebanon, Tennessee, that housed machinery for farmers to repair their tractors on site. The store was called the "Tractor and Implemented Service Company." As of 2010, Tractor Supply Company operates over 1,200 stores across 48 states in the United States.
Tractor Supply Company started as a business in a back-yard shed. J.W. Knapp sold tractor parts out of his garage to a farm community in Lebanon. In the 1960s, the TSC stores became more significant and began offering hardware, supplies, housewares, and clothing. At that time, they also started to sell riding lawnmowers.
During the early years in Lebanon, most tractors were either Ford or Massey Harris. However, as Ford's sales started to decline in rural areas, by 1944, Tractor Supply started selling John Deere tractors. J.W. Knapp asked Mr. Deere for a favor, and he agreed to send a large order of parts for free via train to TSC's Lebanon location
