image The hype is real. This place is a beautiful mix of an inn and an ecolodge. I stayed here solo and had a really nice time. Dont expect the ritz. But do expect clean, quiet, comfortable, with good food and friendly people. The garden and private waterfall are just unreal. As I write this Im falling asleep to the sound of the river and the frogs. Its fantastic. I hope to be back. I also hope the price of rooms doesnt keep going up !

Aloha Scott, thank you so much for your kind words. Kulaniapia is a very special space, and we love taking care of it, and sharing it with our guests.Inflation hits Hawaii especially hard and leaves us with tough choices every day. Ultimately, it's our goal to continue to share this place as we always have, take good care of our staff, and invest in the future. As we balance all of these things, price increases are inevitable, but we hope we never look or cost anything like the Ritz.Mahalo!

image The off-grid cabins consist of simply a bed, a couple USB-A and couple USB-C charging ports, ceiling lights, a battery powered lantern, and deck with table and bench, and night stands beside the bed. There is a place for a suitcase and hooks for clothes. Window blinds open to screens for a nice breeze. The cabin is enclosed in screens to keep bugs out, however no food is allowed in the cabin as this will attract ants. A small amount of insects are still able to get inside the cabin. The abundant population of crab spiders does wonders for keeping the insect population down.
The sinks, toilets, and showers are a very brief walk to the barn. A full communal kitchen and living space is on the second floor of the barn. It is full of fun activities such as books, board games, a star scope, a ukulele, and a lovely view.
The toilets were clean and dimly lit with solar lights and included a beday. If you aren't into camping or have poor bladder control, I wouldn't recommend staying more than a couple of days, but for the avid camper, this place is a dream. The view from the cabin is incredible overlooking the property and the town of Hilo down below. Waking up to the sunrise, the rooster crowing, and the chirping of birds was very nice. The frogs can be loud depending on how close to the cabin they get, so ear plugs could come in handy.
Nearby activities: The swimming at the base of the waterfall was such a unique experience and refreshing. Getting into the water is somewhat difficult due to the slipper rocks. The grounds are being improved upon and will likely be more accessible in the future. A hiking path connects the Inn to the waterfall base, and extends along the river shore. This path is a bit bumpy but not difficult to traverse.
Paddle boards are available for rent using an app.
Walkability: The Inn and adjacent cabin property/farm is up a single lane road a short drive up from the town of Hilo. Many of the surrounding attractions off-property are not in walking distance but there is plenty of space for hikes and star gazing on-site.
Food & drinks: Breakfast at the Inn's outdoor dining area overlooking the on-property waterfall was spectacular. The food was delicious and included coffee, tea, oatmeal and fruit.
Breakfast is pre-ordered the day before using an app. Some food can be packaged to go. Breakfast slots seemed to start around 8:30am ending just before 10am.
