Hotel David Whitney, Autograph Collection

Prepaid $700 for a hotel room for a christmas present for my wife. As is known to happen, life got in the way and we needed to change due to a personal conflict with our kids. Called the Hotel and Marriot (yes, we are members) and asked to move the date into May because we also rebooked our show at the Detroit Opera. Because we prepaid the hotel room there was nothing that could be done. I even offered to pay more to make this trip work. You can be sure I will go out of my way to avoid this poor service, but great job to them for getting $700 from our family.

I'll start by saying I have stayed at this hotel a number of times over the years when it carried the Marriott Aloft name and never had any issues. However, the last stay at the end of December 2023 I had an issue with the valet service and in turn the hotel. A few weeks after our stay I received a fine from a parking garage claiming we did not pay for overnight parking. It's a $20 fee for overnight parking and a $70 fine. I contacted the company managing the garage and explained we paid the hotel ($42) to valet our car for our stay. After going back and forth a number of times, they claimed they don't allow valet parking and we would need to contact the valet company. Since I didn't notate the name of the valet when we stayed, I emailed the hotel to explain the situation. After a week or so of that email going unanswered, I called the hotel on March 13, 2024. When I asked for a manager I was told they were in a meeting and can they forward me to voicemail. I said "fine" and then couldn't leave a message as the mailbox was full. I immediately called back and could not get anyone to answer the phone and it finally disconnected on its own. I called 4 to 5 times within the next 30 minutes and every time the call went unanswered and eventually disconnected. I understand a hotel front desk can be busy, but I'm suspicious my calls went unanswered due to seeing my number again on caller ID. There are reviews on the old Aloft page with this same complaint. Between the shady business practices and lack of concern/response from hotel management, I would recommend staying elsewhere. I doubt I will consider them for future stays.

The Whitney Autograph Hotel (they are no longer Aloft) is a beautiful building, comfortable beds, and spacious rooms. However, the service fell short of expectations. Bartenders at the main restaurant were slow and inexperienced, resulting in delays and poorly prepared cocktails. During check-in, we wandered around until an employee noticed and fetched the front desk staff. The room was noisy, with audible lobby conversations, music, and neighborly sounds. Friendly employees aside, the overall service experience left much to be desired. Additionally, the fire alarm went off at 6:45 am, but no clearance message or directions were provided. This lack of communication added to the overall frustration.
