Sonic Corp. franchises and operates a chain of restaurants in the United States and internationally, featuring a limited menu of hamburgers, French fries, drinks, and shakes. Its menu consists of various items from breakfast to salads to desserts. The company was founded in 1953 as Top Hat Drive-In in Shawnee, Oklahoma, by Troy Smith and Dr. Maurice J. Friedman, who had bought out a competitor with the same name in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and renamed it Sonic. The Top Hat Drive-In became Sonic in 1965.
The company's revenues and profits have increased steadily over the past decade, with press reports indicating that Sonic Corp. (including its subsidiaries) posted $14,500,000 in revenues in 2013. The majority of the restaurants are located in Oklahoma, Texas, and the midwest United States areas. Established franchises include 47 locations in Texas, 37 locations in California, and 11 in Florida. The company estimates that it has 6,000 franchisees.
Sonic Corp. is headquartered in Shawnee, Oklahoma. It is publicly traded on the NASDAQ stock market under the symbol SONC. Total assets for the Sonic Corp. in 2013 were $104,451,000 (NASDAQ).
Sonic's restaurants offer made-to-order hamburgers and other sandwiches, hot dogs and french fries, and shakes and floats, using fresh meat and produce. Several menu items have been introduced over the past decade, such as the Grilled Chicken Salad, Chili Cheese Tots, Onion Rings, and Jalapeno Poppers. Some restaurants offer breakfast items after 11:00 a.m., including some combination meals served all day. Other menu items include burgers, chicken sandwiches, wraps, quesadillas, and salads.
In recent years, Sonic Corp has largely extended its operations to the international market with several locations in Canada (including one Sonic in Montreal), Mexico, China, and the United Kingdom. As of December 2021, 37 Sonic locations are in the major cities in California and 18 locations in Florida.
