image Mike was great with explaining all the details of the job and why the tank had to be replaced, when replacing the leach field. They were on time and communicated every detail. They also did not price in the loom that they used to grade the property after because they forgot to and did not try to throw it in after the job was complete. A plus company and did a great job!!! Service: Septic system installation

Kimberly Owens on Google

image Hi, I would like to share my experience with Rhode Island Septic Design and Installations aka Rhode Island Septic Services. In December, we reached out for a proposal for a new septic system. There was a lot of back and forth about the size of the tank we should use because our house has 4 bedrooms if you include the basement, but the two basement rooms are not used as bedrooms and are unlikely to be used as bedrooms in the future because of their location. Mike Sliney (owner) gave us conflicting information multiple times about what was required. He stated that the tank needing to be large enough for 4 bedrooms. He also stated that it had to be 3 bedroom to match our tax card. So we understand theres a discrepancy. We asked if we could just do a 3-bed system because we have no intention of using those basement rooms as bedrooms and he said wed have trouble selling the house later (I believe he meant if the next owner wanted those rooms to function as bedrooms.) All logical so far. But then he stated that if we did a 4 bedroom wed have to build an addition to justify the larger tank (WHAT?!?!) and the confusing and inconsistent information continued. We ended up getting a second opinion because we struggled so much to get a straight answer.
The second opinion was MUCH cheaper and they suggested that the system Mike proposed was a poor option because the drainage went uphill and pumps need to be replaced frequently and we had enough low ground not to need that.
During all of this, Mike rarely spoke to me (the homeowner) and insisted on speaking to my partner (not the homeowner) so he either has a problem with me or women in general. I would ask him a question and he would literally turn and respond to my partner Um, hello??
So we end up going with another company but they had already dug the test hole so we still owed for that. No issues there, they did a service, we pay for it. I asked for them to please send the DEM paperwork for the test hole and they refused to send until after payment was received. This back and forth took so much time that they actually charged me another $78 in interest even though I was waiting for them to send me the paperwork. Theres no due date on the invoice so I considered fighting this, but not really worth it for under $100.
Overall, I experienced:
- Disrespect and perceived misogyny
- Inconsistent and confusing requirements
- Recommendations for a more expensive system
- Additional fees in the form of interest when I was waiting for documentation
I generally make a point to write positive reviews and avoid negative ones because I feel like there are a lot more negative ones out there and I really want to reward good interactions when I have them, but Im making an exception here because my experience was so poor that I think its important I warn others.

My name is Cathy Sliney, I own Rhode Island Septic Design and Installations, Inc. and I am also the Office Manager. I process everything that comes through the office. Here is the truth of the matter. Ms Owens called for an estimate for a new septic system because her property had a failed septic. In Dec 2022 Mike and Peter went to look at the job to discuss with Kimberly what needed to be done. Kimberly was very happy with the information she received. She told Mike and Peter that the first estimate she had gotten with another contractor, she was not confident with the information he gave her and she was not comfortable with how he spoke to her. I sent a proposal out to Kimberly that afternoon. She signed the proposal on Dec 30, 2022. The test hole was then scheduled to be done. I sent her the DEM package for signatures, and she signed the rest of the documentation on January 5, 2023. The test hole was then completed Jan 9, 2023. Everything was going along smoothly. Kimberly stated that the house was a 4-bed, however the tax card stated that it was a 3-bed. So she had to go to the town hall to change the tax card, so we waited (for months). I kept checking in with them to see if the tax card had been updated because the tax card always has to match with the proposed septic design - DEM rules. Finally on May 31, 2023 I got a response: they were still on the fence about the septic install and still hadn't updated the tax card. June 5, 2023 I sent the first bill to Kimberly to cover the cost for the test hole that was performed January 9, 2023 because we were beginning to realize that they may not be going through with this installation. We needed to at least be compensated for the work we had done thus far - for those who aren't aware a test hole requires a member from our construction crew to bring an excavator to the property to meet with a DEM official to dig the test hole. After waiting for 9 months I decided to write them a letter stating that interest had incurred which brought the bill up by $78.00. Finally on Sept 18, 2023 - after the saga - we received a check to cover the cost of the test hole plus the interest. There was not once that we were out of line in anything that was said. We are a family run and owned business - 69 years and counting - and we are very proud of what we do for the people of Rhode Island. I will not allow someone to smear my husbands' name like they have. Sincerely, Cathy Sliney
