I had to call the Police to make an appointment.
I found errors on my 2023 return that amounted to a substantial tax penalty. My return was not explained sufficiently, and my wife and I were simply told you should take out more money next year. After spending many hours reviewing the tax code, I found errors in my prepared tax return. When I called to speak with Mr. Douglas McDonald (the person that prepared my return) for multiple days in a row, I was consistently told that he was busy (he is triple booked).
I went to this branch office today to speak with Mr. Donald's supervisor/leader, a Ms. Heather (unknown last name). Ms. Heather was the team lead for this location on 4/9/24. Ms. Heather looked at my documents and plugged in the numbers into H&R Blocks system. She informed me that Mr. Douglas typed the numbers in correctly. When I asked her to further explain how my K-1 triggered such a substantial tax penalty, Ms. Heather informed me that she was not familiar with K-1s and would need to find someone else to explain it to [me].
At this point, and with less than a week from the tax deadline, I demanded to speak with someone that could help resolve this issue relatively quickly. This branch stated that only one person could explain it to me, and that person had limited availability until Sunday (the day before the tax deadline).
I informed Ms. Heather that I would be contacting my own attorney and that I had concerns about how this business impacts its clients tax consequences due to erroneous work.
Ms. Heather refused to provide me with her business card after I provided her with mine. She quickly took all her business cards from her desk, left me in the cubicle, and ran to the back of the office. I informed Ms. Heather that I would be contacting the attorney generals office to file a complaint. I made it clear that my complaint was against the business and its practices, and not against Ms. Heather personally.
Ms. Heather then asked me to leave because she felt threatened that I was going to engage legal counsel and file a complaint. I took this to mean that I had been trespassed from this location.
Confused with the directions of this branch (i.e., come back to speak with someone else vs. you are trespassed), I complied and stepped outside of the business into the parking lot. I then called the Police to request if I can make an appointment with the expert in the office as I did not want to get arrested for coming back for a later appointment (if I was indeed trespassed). I was allowed to make an appointment for this Sunday.
On 4/9/24, I was forced to hire my own tax specialist to review and confirm H&R Blocks error. Instead of the substantial tax penalty, I am now getting a refund. I will be demanding a full refund from H&R Block corporate. Please be cautious when engaging in tax-preparation services at this location.
