Whataburger is an American fast food restaurant chain founded in Corpus Christi, TX in 1950 by Harmon Dobson. He started with the simple idea of making tasty hamburgers that were so big you needed two hands to hold them. Since most competitors' burgers were much smaller by comparison, Dobson expected his customers to be so surprised by the sheer magnitude of his hamburgers that they would exclaim, "What a burger!"
The menu has expanded over the years to include chicken strips, fried fish sandwiches and a variety of specialty burgers, but the classic Whataburger - with or without cheese - is still a favorite with the 60 million customers served annually.
Ten years after its founding in 1950, the company had expanded to include 17 locations in Texas, Tennessee and Florida. By 1980, just 30 years after the first Whataburger opened its doors, the franchise launched its 300th location.
Today the company has nearly 50,000 employees. With 880+ Whataburger locations in 10 states stretching from Arizona to Florida - and with 30 new locations coming up in Kansas and Missouri - Whataburger is proud to be ranked as one of the top 10 largest hamburger franchises in the United States.
