The Loma Mar Store & Kitchen is fantastic! A lovely building, excellent scenery, great food, and friendly folks. In fact, I'll say it twice: the food is fantastic! Super delicious and fresh. Very surprising to find out in the middle of the woods. It doesn't get much better than a visit to Loma Mar on a nice day. I'm definitely making a point to come back here from now on.

Every other Friday our housecleaning service comes and my wife and I use it as an excuse to go out for a drive and an outdoor lunch somewhere, often somewhere along the coast. Yesterday we drove to Santa Cruz and up Highway 1, then inland past Pescadero to Loma Mar and this quaint little store in the redwoods. The people who work there were friendly and gave us great service, and the little outdoor patio was cute, but it was the food that blew me away.My wife got the grilled duck bowl and could not stop raving about it. The duck was meltingly tender and all the accompaniments were top-notch. The duck was from a farm just up the road.I got their steak and Stilton hand pie and tater tots. The locally-sourced beef had that strong (in the best way) beef flavor I remember from eating beef as a child; I haven't had beef that flavorful in years. The Stilton made its presence known but was in balance with the beef, neither overwhelming the other. The crust was perfection; well-seasoned, not just a bland wrapper for the contents. The chimichurri sauce was citrusy and was an ideal complement for the beef. Likewise, the tater tots were perfectly cooked and well-seasoned, unlike so many bland tots these days. I washed it down with a delicious Animal Citrus IPA from San Francisco's Fort Point Beer Co.You can bet we'll be going back to sample other things on the menu. Based on our experience, we got a couple of their frozen chicken pot pies to go, and lunch yesterday was so good I'm thinking of heating one up to have as an unusual breakfast this morning.
