I went into the downtown Cedar Rapids branch office around 4 on Dec 2, 2016 and asked if I could break a $100 so I could buy food at Jimmy Johns across the street. It was all I had on me and they don't accept $100 bills over there. Which is understandable for a smaller business. I was told by both a teller and a manager "We can't break $100 bills." I politely asked "How can you not? You're a bank." Response? "People counterfeit them and we can't take a chance." ...did they just openly admit to not being able to spot fakes? I come back with "You're an authority on legal tender. If someone can't walk into a bank and have you break a bill or even ask if it's real or not, then who can?" The lady said it's policy and they can only do it for members but if I want, I can go to another bank and try. She sent me to another bank! No "If you want to become a member, we could do it." Perfect opportunity to recruit a new person, but they didn't. I wonder why. Luckily, about a block north of them is a Hills Bank and Trust. They had absolutely no problem breaking my bill and they actually APOLOGIZED for NXT doing that because there's not a real good reason for a bank to do that. Hills apologized for NXT! (I'd like to add I'm not a member of Hills Bank nor am I affiliated with them. I'm just giving them a pat on the back and a thanks for being helpful, for doing their job as a bank and exchanging money for people, and for being very polite about it.) I do want to mention I followed up with NXT banks via email when I got home. I received an email from Stephanie L. Walterman, Vice President of Operations, on Monday and she responded with this: "Due to regulatory recordkeeping requirements for certain cash transactions, as well as increases in counterfeit bill production and use; NXT Bank’s internal policy is not to exchange large bills for individuals without an established banking relationship." In short "We reserve the right refuse service because our tellers may or may not be able to spot a fake from a real bill". This honestly scares the hell out of me and I will never ever EVER send someone to this bank. I would send them to Wells Fargo before I send them here, and my conscience would still be clean. Do you want a bank that can't spot a fake and that would rather make a fellow American walk in the cold to another bank to change out a $100 so they can buy lunch? Furthermore, do you want a bank that refers away possible customers? If so, this is your bank. Realistically, you should be looking for other much better choices. Please another bank...ANY other bank...and go with them.
