  • Hi

University Plaza Hotel. What a sad, miserable shack of an establishment. I come to this review from a different angle than that of a typical guest. I’m a former employee, which frankly, would be able to provide an even greater insight to a review, in my opinion. Understand, the management who responds fo reviews will attempt to besmirch mine, but everything I say here is completely true. If it weren’t, I wouldn’t be taking time to write all of it out. The whole reason as to why the hotel is in such terrible shape is due to the sheer incompetence of management. Poor decisions made has lead to many, many issues within the hotel. Staff are being overworked with little monetary compensation, while the management takes more than they need. Morale is low, because they can’t seem to treat the employees with respect, or even bother to hire enough of them to make for a schedule that respects the outside lives of the employees. It’s a very, very corporate kind of experience; they genuinely do not care about you or your well-being, as long as you’re making them more money. The hotel itself is falling apart due to a lack of interest in investing to improve the hotel. Many of the rooms’ A/Cs don’t work, there’s mold, bed bugs, an atmosphere of shoddiness to most rooms. The money COULD be spent to improve the place, but instead is being used to line the pockets of the over-privileged management, who don’t deserve even half of what they earn. If you’re putting a roof over the heads of people who need it, and are paying their hard-earned money for it, it stands to reason you should actually care about providing, at a bare minimum, a passable experience for them. University Plaza Hotel fails to do this on every level. I could write a book on the nonsense that is University Plaza Hotel, but it’s just soul-crushing to even talk about. Such a negative, shallow, unfulfilling environment. Stay far away from this place, get an Air BnB instead.

The pictures and description certainly do not accurately represent the extras and condition of this hotel promotes. The hotel and our room was very dated! We arrived on a 16 degree Friday afternoon. Upon arrival we were looking forward to having a drink at the hotel bar which we found out was closed and would not open. Also the breakfast we thought we would get the next morning we came to find out was also non existent. Our room was freezing cold when we arrived and discovered that it never ever would warm up. According to another guest we met in the hallway while the fire alarm went off 2x at 1am in the morning. He was on his 3rd night there and the heat was not working in half of the hotel, Of course it was the half we were given a room in. Thankfully we had extra blankets and body heat to keep us warm. He also mentioned that it was also the 2nd night the fire alarm went off. It apparently it was because the fire department just did a check on them 3 days ago and so they would continue to go off each night at wee hours. We decided to leave immediately upon waking up the next morning and unfortunately cut our stay in Springfield short. We found it interesting that the front desk attendant never asked us how our stay was. He obviously knew what our answer would be so why would he ask? Needless to say when we return to Springfield we will never be staying at this hotel again! We will however revisit the enjoyable establishments we could easily walk to that exceeded our expectations.
