Just spoke with Latara about an upcoming reservation and Latara was AMAZING! She was extremely helpful, positive and kind. Great job Marriott, good hire! :) Noteworthy details: Elyton is a beautiful hotel in the heart of downtown Birmingham. Make sure you check out MOONSHINE, their rooftop bar with incredible views of the city!

The Elyton is right in Downtown Birmingham, close to everything and within walking distance to most. The hotel has had a nice renovation and it is very trendy. The staff is pleasant and helpful. However, the rooms are a bit over-styled (see photos). The room I stayed in was pretty busy with a lot of detail, but it was comfortable. The standout for this hotel is the rooftop bar, Moon Shine. The elevator that takes you to the roof has a clear ceiling and you can watch as the car approaches the roof of the building. The bar is nice and it gives fantastic access to terrific views of the city below. I did not have a chance to sample their Sunday brunch, but I have heard it is very good. Maybe I'll be back for that soon. The only negative is the cost of valet. ~$37 for valet is steep considering the lot is directly across the street from the hotel and was not even 1/2 capacity when I was there. I can see if there are big events in town and the hotel is fully booked, but not every day. Rooms: Comfy, busy style and detail. Walkability: Close to everything.

This was a seamlessly pleasant one night stay. First off, this is one of the few Marriott hotels where I've had a mobile check-in work as it should -- I left my car with the valet and walked right up to my room without any front-desk interaction. My room was unique in shape, due to this being an older building, but the design and decor were great. Also, it was spotless! All of the interactions I had with the staff were friendly and professional. Overall it exceeded my expectations greatly. Rooms: The room I had was a corner room and was slightly narrow, as this is a retrofitted old building. However, space was well used and maximized the city views very well. Nearby activities: The hotel is within a few blocks of the McWane Center, the Alabama Theatre, and several restaurants. In about 15 minutes, you can walk to the Art Museum, Boutwell Auditorium, and the BJCC. The airport is a 10-15 minute drive and the Amtrak station is about 3 blocks away. Safety: I live in a west coast city, so not much bothers me that might sketch other people out. That said, this seemed to be a very quiet weekend in Birmingham. Most of the streets were deserted. There was a huge family event around the McWane Science Center with a lot of parents and children about. One person (very politely) asked if I could spare any change. All of the streets around the hotel were clean. Walkability: I've never thought of Birmingham as a walkable city, but I was quite surprised at how close to so many things the hotel is. I walked up to Five Points South, to the art museum, to the Amtrak station, and to several other places around downtown during my stay. I might rethink this were it 90 degrees in the summer. Food & drinks: I had drinks and a snack on the rooftop bar in the evening. It was pretty standard; the only issue was that the menu had just changed the day before and they were adjusting. I got a huge portion of olives!

My husband and I decided to do a valentines staycation here over the weekend. The room was nice. Bed was comfortable. Our overall stay was fine. However, I accidentally left my dress hanging in the closet. I realized on the same day we checked out and called the front desk but the room had already been turned over. The woman at the front desk was kind enough to check the room but told me nothing was in the closet and I was told to call housekeeping in the morning to check the lost and found. When I called the next morning I was told they did not have it. They claimed they checked with the girl who cleaned my room and claimed that she didnt take anything from the room and had nothing on her cart. Also that they didnt have a lost and found. They claim it vanished without a trace and offered me no further help. I am very disappointed. Clearly someone on staff at the hotel has taken the dress (I was told no one had checked into the room after us). I know I am at fault for accidentally leaving it behind, but this dress was very sentimental to me- and this should have been easily retrieved. Objects do not vanish into thin air. Due to this-I will not recommend this hotel to anyone and will be making a rule to myself to never hang clothes in a hotel closet again.
