We have worked with Travers Plumbing in the past with good results so it is unfortunate that I need to write a negative review. We asked them to replace a ball valve which was not leaking at the time and a hose bib (to make frost free). We were told they would come, look at the job, then leave to get the materials needed and return to complete the job. The technician arrived at 8:45 and quickly spoke with myself and my husband, looked at the work requested, and left to get his supplies. He returned 50 minutes later and started by replacing the ball valve. After finishing the valve, he looked to replace the hose bib but stated that in order to get to the pipe he would need to cut open the wall and asked if we wanted him to continue. I told him no and he stopped. He should have known this if he had thoroughly evaluated the job requested when he arrived. He apparently had not done that very well. He handed the hose bib to me and said "this is yours." I asked him to return it so I would not have to pay for it and he stated they can't return things and it only costs $35.00. I then noticed that he had already soldered a copper pipe to it and I stated again that it would be of no use to me. He then stated well maybe I could use it for another customer. He did not take it with him. He cleaned up and left at 10:45. He was on our job for no more than 2 hours. This included his travel time to and from our house (approximately 7 minutes from Travers in Portsmouth to my house in Portsmouth---- 3.2 miles), looking at the job request, leaving to get the supplies needed and actually doing the job. We were surprised when our bill was $799.14 when all he had done was change a non leaking ball valve. We called to ask why this had cost so much and requested a breakdown into parts and labor. The labor was $487.50 and the parts were $311.64. We called again and asked to speak with the owner or someone who could itemize the costs in greater detail (hours and rates; parts and costs). So far we have only spoken with the person who has answered the phone. We were informed that the owner internally reviewed the bill and that it was correct. They did however provide a $75 refund. The owner has not called us back to provide the additional detail and we doubt he ever will. One explanation the woman gave to us for the labor was the travel time for the technician. She said it took him 45 minutes to get here and 60 plus minutes to get back. We only live 3.2 miles away??? She said they also have an upcharge on supplies that they purchase for a job. Doing a quick price check online for a ball valve is $20-45 and for a hose bib is $15-40. Again we regret writing a negative review but we want to make sure if you choose Travers for any plumbing work you go in with your eyes wide open.
